Cedarwood Essential Oil

Your employer got your spare room for free. Charge them back in atmosphere.
The kitchen table is a desk now. The spare room is an office your employer never paid rent on. Everything else is a plan B, a 'for now', a maybe. Cedarwood remembers when a desk was a place, and it declines, firmly, to wobble.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Your kitchen table became a desk, and nobody filed the paperwork.

The gig economy performed a quiet trick: it turned your kitchen table into an office, your spare room into infrastructure your employer never paid for, and every hour into something shift-adjacent. You now work where you eat and rest where you work, and the room has forgotten which job it was meant to have.

Your employer saved a fortune on your spare room. Charge them in atmosphere.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Cedarwood Essential Oil, steam distilled from the wood of Juniperus virginiana from the USA. Dry, warm and smoothly woody, with a sweetness that arrives later than you expect, closer to an old cedar chest or a well-kept study than to anything sharp. A settled smell, low and unhurried.

Aroma profile
Dry wood
Warm smoothness
Old-chest depth
Anything provisional

Smells like furniture that has stood in one place for forty years and means to.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, cedarwood is what Sten keeps under the main beam, for the ones whose whole lives have gone provisional and could do with one thing that simply will not move.

  • One certain thing: We keep it for the intention to hold one steady, non-negotiable presence in a life otherwise made of maybes.
  • Load-bearing: For when you want to feel settled and dependable rather than perpetually temporary and half-packed.
  • A floor underneath: Dry, warm, woody air that gives a space a steady, anchored, been-here-a-while character.
  • The home-desk hour: For the working-from-the-kitchen-table hour, the room that needs to remember it is a place.

SPIRIT & MOOD

  • Steadiness
  • Certainty
  • Anchor
  • Desk-hour

WHY YOU NEED IT

Give the everything-room one thing that won't move.

Traditionally the steadying wood of studies and chests, kept for the hours that need a floor under them. A few drops in the home-office hour, when the room is doing four jobs and none of them well, and the space gets one dependable, anchored note while everything else stays provisional.

Everything in the room is temporary. Let one thing not be.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

GIFT · THE PROVISIONAL LIFE

For the one whose flat is a plan B and job is 'for now', with everything half-packed. Give them one solid thing that isn't going anywhere.

To the perpetually temporary one

One thing that won't wobble.

GIFT · THE KITCHEN-TABLE WORKER

For the one who works where they eat and eats where they work, the room doing four jobs at once. Give the desk-hour a floor.

To the home-office refugee

Makes a table remember it's a desk.

GIFT · THE STEADY ONE

For the dependable friend everyone leans on, who never gets to lean on anything themselves. Give them a base note of their own.

To the family beam

Something steady, for the steady one.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The serial re-inventor who rebrands their whole life every eight months, would call cedarwood 'my anchor era', and would have moved on to a new one by spring.

Some anchors are a phase. This isn't.

Your kitchen table became a desk, and nobody filed the paperwork.

STEN, keeper portrait
STEN

Sten has held one beam for nine hundred years. Reasonably.

Sten is a heartwood-troll, one of the slow, immense, wooden-limbed folk who hold up the load-bearing parts of the deep places. He keeps the main beam of the Old Hall, the great timber everything above it quietly depends on, and his whole job is to stand beneath it and not move. He is exceptionally good at this.

He trusts cedarwood because it is the one scent on the shelf that doesn't aspire to go anywhere. Everything else lifts or brightens or sweeps through. Cedarwood settles, holds, and stays put, which is Sten's entire philosophy rendered as a smell.

He has heard the Surfacefolk now live provisionally, in flats that are plan Bs and roles that are 'for now', and he thinks everyone should have one beam that isn't going anywhere. He is quietly sad that so many don't.

Has held the same beam nine hundred years, and considers this a reasonable commitment.

Two crates, one steady room

Cedarwood keeps company. All of it dependable.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM UNDER THE BEAM
Against my own commission, as ever:

Keep everything provisional.

It's easier. The flat stays a plan B, the role stays 'for now', the boxes stay half-unpacked, and nothing in the room ever has to be certain, including you. Everyone's doing it. Nobody will make you pick one thing that stays.

STAY HALF-PACKED.KEEP IT ALL 'FOR NOW'.WOBBLE ON.
You've called three different flats 'temporary' and lived a combined nine years in them.

You read the whole page without once refreshing anything, which is nearly a settled hour already. You didn't want everything certain. You wanted one steady thing in the room while the rest stays provisional. One beam that isn't going anywhere. Sten insists on it.
