WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Hosting, now a production line of anxiety.

Hosting used to be having people round. Now it's a production line: the matching napkins, the tablescape, the pre-batched cocktails, the pre-batched anxiety, whole industries quietly feeding on your fear of an unimpressed guest, of the wrong plates, of not being the sort of person who does this effortlessly. And in all of it, the one thing that genuinely decides how an evening feels, the actual air of the room, gets left entirely to chance.

The tablescape can fail. The air shouldn't.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Lime Essential Oil, cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus aurantifolia, the Mexican lime, from Mexico. Sharp, zesty and vividly green, brighter and greener than lemon, with an almost fizzing, carbonated-citrus snap to it. It's the smell of a room waking up: the instant, unmissable green spark that tells a flat, nervous, pre-party space that the evening has, in fact, begun.

Aroma profile
Green zest
Sharp fizz
Bright citrus
Matching napkins

A carbonated green snap. The room wakes up. So do you.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, lime is what Flint keeps in the Front Room, for the ones counting down to the doorbell in a small private panic about whether the guests will like them.

  • The air, sorted: Kept for the intention to get the one part of hosting that actually lands, the feel of the room, right before anyone arrives.
  • They'd come back: For when you need the flat to sparkle so they'll like you, which is nearly the truth: you need to believe they'd come back. They would.
  • A green spark: Sharp, zesty, green citrus air that snaps a flat pre-party room instantly awake.
  • The pre-party hour: For the small chaos before the evening behaves, the countdown to the doorbell.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Spark the room. Then answer the door.

Kept for the pre-party hour, the small chaos before the evening behaves, the countdown to the doorbell. A few drops when you want the room to snap awake and bright and welcoming, so the one thing that actually decides the evening, how the air feels, is handled before a single guest arrives.

Green spark first. Self-doubt second. Doorbell third.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Cold-pressed lime is phototoxic; another reason this is for the diffuser, not the skin. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE ANXIOUS HOST

Counts down to the doorbell in a quiet panic about whether the guests like them. They do. They'd come back. Give them one less thing to worry about: the air.

To the nervous host

They'd come back.

GIFT · THE PRE-PARTY PERFECTIONIST

Sweats the tablescape and the napkins and forgets the room's actual feel. Redirect them to the part that matters.

To the tablescaper

Sort the air first.

GIFT · THE GREEN-CITRUS SORT

Loves a sharp, zesty, fizzing green lime over the softer citrus. This is that snap, bottled.

To the zesty one

A green spark in a bottle.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The host so effortlessly perfect they've never once feared an unimpressed guest. Insufferable, frankly. They don't need it. You might.

For the rest of us, who worry.

Hosting, now a production line of anxiety.

PORTRAIT · FLINT
IN THE FRONT ROOM
FLINT

Flint sorted the air. The napkins were never the point.

Flint is an ellyll, one of the tiny bright green fae of the Welsh groves and hollows, quick as a struck spark and forever busying about the edges of a gathering. He keeps the Front Room of the Sanctum, and he trusts lime because it is the green spark that wakes a room, sharp and instant and welcoming, the one reliable thing in the whole anxious production of hosting.

He has watched the Surfacefolk work themselves into a small private panic before every gathering, over napkins and tablescapes and whether they are the sort of person who hosts effortlessly, and he finds it a little heartbreaking, because they have the question backwards. The guests are not coming to inspect the napkins. They are coming because they like you.

So Flint sparks the room bright, and gets the one thing that matters, the air, sorted before the doorbell, and whispers the true thing to the host: they'd come back. They would.

Sparks the room bright before guests; sorts the air; promises the anxious host they'd come back.

Two crates, pre-party

Lime keeps company. All of it a green spark.

About the real reason you want it perfect:

You need to believe they'd come back.

You tell yourself you need the flat to sparkle so the guests will like you, and that's nearly the truth, but not quite. What you actually need is to believe they'd come back, that you're the sort of person people want to return to, that the evening will be warm enough to earn a second one. They would. You are. It will. The napkins were never the question.

MATCH THE NAPKINS.PRE-BATCH THE PANIC.FEAR THE GUEST.
You once judged a whole evening a failure over a detail not one guest noticed.

Sort the one thing that actually decides how it feels. Set the bright green lime going, let the room snap awake and welcoming, and answer the door. Green spark first, self-doubt second, doorbell third.
