WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Clean, now a shouting match.

Clean became a brand war, fought in neon. The shelves are a wall of bottles in aggressive greens and blues, each one shouting a promise in capital letters, each one louder and more antibacterial than the last, as though freshness were a thing you win by volume. And a plain leaf that simply, quietly smells fresh, that makes a room feel clean without announcing anything, has become, in this climate, almost a countercultural act. No neon. No claims. No shouting. Just green.

No claims, no neon, no shouting. Just green. Radical stuff.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Niaouli Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca quinquenervia from Indonesia, a paperbark cousin of tea tree, eucalyptus and cajuput. Fresh, clean and green, with a soft, sweet, gently camphoraceous character, rounder and better-mannered than eucalyptus, and notably softer and less harsh than its brisker relatives. It's the smell of a genuinely fresh room that has not, at any point, felt the need to raise its voice about it.

The polite one in the paperbark family. Minds greatly. Says little.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, niaouli is what Tace keeps in the Quiet Green, for the ones whose standards are high and whose announcements are low, and who get mistaken, wrongly, for not minding.

  • Clean, without the caps lock: Kept for the intention to have a genuinely fresh, clean-feeling room without a single neon bottle shouting a promise at you.
  • You mind. Quietly.: For when people mistake your low announcements for not caring. You care a great deal. The polite green minds with you.
  • Soft fresh-green air: Fresh, sweet, softly camphoraceous green air, cleaner-feeling than the shouting kind and far better mannered.
  • The polite reset hour: For the practical, tidy, clean-green room after the chores are done, minus the fanfare.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Fresh air that doesn't make a scene.

Kept for the practical, polite reset, the clean-green room after the chores, the fresh tact of a space that feels looked-after without any fuss. A few drops when you want a genuinely fresh room and none of the neon shouting, the quiet, high-standards kind of clean that doesn't need to announce itself.

Your standards are high. Your announcements are low. Same.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Niaouli is high in cineole; use in a well-ventilated space and avoid around young children, during pregnancy, and anyone with asthma or breathing sensitivities. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE QUIET HIGH-STANDARDS ONE

Cares enormously and says almost nothing about it, and gets read as not minding. They mind. Give them the green that minds with them.

To the quietly exacting one

You mind. Quietly.

GIFT · THE NEON-WEARY

Tired of freshness that comes screaming in capital letters from a neon bottle. Give them the clean that doesn't shout.

To the un-shouty one

No caps lock.

GIFT · THE SOFT-GREEN SORT

Loves a fresh, clean, green scent but the rounded, sweeter, better-mannered kind rather than the harsh medicinal one. This is that.

To the polite-green one

Fresh, but mannered.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The person who believes a thing isn't clean unless a bottle screamed a percentage at them first. The quiet green would strike them as suspiciously calm. Let them shout.

Volume is not hygiene.

Clean, now a shouting match.

PORTRAIT · TACE
IN THE QUIET GREEN
TACE

Tace has never heard a tidy person raise their voice.

Tace is a bean-tighe, one of the quiet women-of-the-house fairies who keep a place immaculate to an exacting standard and would never dream of mentioning it. She keeps the Quiet Green of the Sanctum, and she trusts niaouli because it minds the room without shouting about it: fresh, clean, soft and green, doing the work and skipping the announcement entirely.

She has watched the Surfacefolk turn cleanliness into a shouting match of neon bottles and capital letters, and, worse, watched them mistake anyone quiet about their standards for someone who hasn't got any. Tace has extremely high standards. She simply sees no reason to raise her voice about them, and rather resents the implication that caring and shouting are the same thing.

So she keeps the green quiet and the room genuinely fresh, for the ones who mind deeply and announce little, and who are, she knows, tired of being mistaken for not minding at all.

Keeps the room immaculate; never mentions it; minds far more than she'll ever say.

Two crates, quietly fresh

Niaouli keeps company. All of it green, none of it shouting.

About being mistaken for not minding:

You mind. They just can't hear it.

Your standards are high and your announcements are low, and somewhere along the way people started reading the quiet as indifference, as though caring only counts if you say it loudly and often. You mind a great deal. You mind about the room, the work, the details nobody thanks you for. You just never learned to shout about it, and shouldn't have to.

SHOUT TO BE HEARD.BUY THE NEON.PROVE YOU CARE.
You fixed something quietly this week that nobody noticed, because nobody noticed it was ever wrong.

Here's a green that works the same way. Set the soft, fresh niaouli going and let the room be genuinely, quietly clean, minding without a word of fanfare. Fresh air that doesn't make a scene. Familiar?
