Melissa (Blend) Essential Oil

It never went viral. That is the quality mark.
We decided a thing is only real once enough people have seen it. So the loveliest things left are the ones too quiet to shout, the ones nobody could work out how to make loud. Melissa is one of those. It survived by being unprofitable to hype.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING

Amplify, then discard

We decided a thing is only real once enough people have seen it: trending, tagged, stickered, nodded at by the crowd. So anything precious gets picked up, held to the light, photographed from above, and dropped the instant the crowd moves on. The loveliest things left standing are the ones too quiet to shout, the ones nobody could work out how to make loud.

Unhypeable, and all the better for it.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Melissa, better known upstairs as lemon balm, gives up its true oil so grudgingly that it is sold, sensibly, as a blend of fractionated oils built to carry the same fresh lemony character. Soft, sweet and green-lemony, a herb garden in the hour before it gets dramatic about anything. Bottled in small batches, by hand.

WHAT WUNDERWURLD KEEPS IT FOR

Down in the Scent Sanctum, melissa is the quiet we keep for the soft green window nobody thinks to photograph.

  • A delicate reset: Kept for a soft, unhurried reset, the clean-page feeling of an early evening that hasn't been asked to perform.
  • An hour worth keeping: For when you want the good quiet hour to feel like something you are allowed to keep for yourself.
  • Soft green lift: A light green-citrus freshness that resets the air without ever raising its voice.
  • The unphotographed hour: Owns the delicate early evening, the soft green window nobody thinks to photograph.

WHY YOU NEED IT

The unphotographed hour

Kept for the soft green early evening, the good quiet hour you like best and always give away first. Set it going when you want the air to reset gently, fresh but not loud, new but not frantic, and the hour to feel unhurried and a little bit expensive in the private way nobody's meant to notice but you.

Fence one evening off. This is the fence.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Not trending, not featured, not as-seen-on anything. Sold on the radical old basis of being good.

FOR THE ONE WHO GIVES IT ALL AWAY

Always hands over the good hour first, because keeping it never felt allowed. Give them the fence, and permission to use it.

To the one who never keeps any back

Their hour, fenced off.

FOR THE QUIET-TASTE SORT

Likes the lovely thing that never trended, the one you keep for yourself and don't post. This is exactly that.

To the unshouted-good sort

Good, and quiet about it.

FOR THE SOFT-RESET HOME

A room that wants a light, fresh, green-lemon reset in the early evening, nothing loud, nothing performed.

To the clean-page household

The air, quietly turned over.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The one who has to photograph a thing for it to count, would ask how many reviews it has before smelling it, and measures worth in whether other people have heard of it. Melissa is the opposite of their entire value system.

PORTRAIT · MIRL
AT THE QUIET SHELF
MIRL

Mirl counts the bees. They remain a sufficient audience.

On the dim far shelf where the Sanctum keeps its quietest, rarest things, there is a will-o'-the-wisp named Mirl, who has kept the lemon balm for longer than she will admit.

She likes it dim and quiet. Suggest that acres of leaf for a thimble of scent is inefficient and she dims a little further and says nothing, because the ones who ask that are not the ones she keeps it for.

Her only regular visitors are the bees, who have always known about melissa and turn up in a soft gold fuss. “A full and sufficient audience,” she calls them, and on this specific point she is correct.

Never famous; considers this an achievement rather than an oversight.

BEFORE YOU GOTHE HOUR YOU GIVE AWAY
Against my own commission, as usual:

Give it away.

The soft green early evening arrives, the good quiet hour, the one you like best, and you hand it over. You always give it away first, because it never quite felt like a thing you were allowed to keep. The quiet expensive things vanish exactly like this. Not stolen. Donated. By their owners. Cheerfully.

GIVE THE HOUR AWAY.WAIT TO BE ASKED.KEEP NOTHING BACK.
It never went viral. That is the quality mark. Same goes for your quiet hour.

You wanted, under all the giving-away, to keep one evening for yourself. Set melissa going in the soft green window and let the hour be yours, unphotographed and worth keeping precisely because nobody else is watching it. The hour before the hour is yours. In lemon-leaf.
