Wick keeps one chair lit for whoever finally sits down.

Wick is a lampad, one of the small lantern-bearing folk who carry a light along the dark edges of a place. He keeps the Lantern Walk, the green boundary at the garden-edge of the Sanctum, and every evening he goes along it lighting the lanterns, one by one, so the cool dark has somewhere to sit.

He trusts citronella because it is the smell of an evening that has actually been attended: fresh, green and lemony, the air of a garden someone finally sat down in. He has no time for a patio that only gets performed, all lit up and photographed and left empty. That, to Wick, is a waste of a perfectly good lantern.

He has watched the Surfacefolk build beautiful outdoor rooms and then spend every evening maintaining them for an audience over the fence, never once stopping to be in them. He lights the walk for them anyway, patiently, in case tonight is the night one of them finally pulls up a chair and stays.
