Cumin Seed Essential Oil

Strangers cook for your household for money now. Feeding used to be love. Remember?
Feeding people was the oldest unpaid act of love. The delivery economy turned it into apps and reclassified dinner as logistics, and now strangers cook for your household for money. Cumin is the smell of a kitchen that still does the work itself.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Dinner, quietly reclassified as a logistics problem.

Feeding people used to be the oldest unpaid act of love there is: you cooked, they ate, the care was in the doing. Then the delivery economy unbundled it into apps, reclassified dinner as a logistics problem, and arranged for strangers to cook for your household for money. It is convenient. It is also the quiet outsourcing of one of the few kinds of love that can't be misread, and you've been fed by strangers so long you've half-forgotten feeding was ever love at all.

They monetised the meal and skipped the cook. The dark warm air remembers.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Cumin Seed Essential Oil, steam distilled from the seeds of Cuminum cyminum from Egypt. Warm, spicy, nutty and earthy, dry rather than sweet, the deep savoury weight of the spice that has sat at the heart of the world's cooking since the Egyptians and Assyrians. It smells, unmistakably, of a real meal being made by someone who meant it.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, cumin is what Barm keeps behind the pantry door, for the ones who've been fed by strangers so long they've half-forgotten feeding was ever love.

  • Feeding as love: Kept for the intention to remember that cooking for the people you love is the oldest unpaid act of care there is.
  • The kitchen that works: For when you want your own kitchen to feel like it still does the work, not a room that reheats what an app delivered.
  • A real dinner in the air: Warm, dark, savoury air that gives a space the character of an actual meal being cooked.
  • The cook's hour: For the hour you make something real, with your hands, for people you'd feed for free.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Make the kitchen do the work again.

Kept for the hour you cook something real, with your hands, for people you'd feed for nothing. A few drops when you want the room to smell of an actual meal underway rather than a bag left on the step, and the kitchen to feel like it still does the work.

The good, warm, savoury air of a kitchen that still cooks.

GIFT · THE ONE WHO OUTSOURCED DINNER

Hasn't cooked a real meal in months, feeds the household from apps, misses something they can't quite name. Give them the kitchen back.

To the app-fed one

The kitchen, doing the work again.

GIFT · THE ONE WHO COOKS AS LOVE

Feeds everyone they love as the one language of care that can't be misread. Give them the savoury hour, for after.

To the one who feeds everyone

For the cook, alone at last.

GIFT · THE SAVOURY SORT

Quietly done with everything smelling of vanilla and holidays; wants a real meal, not a pudding.

To the anti-dessert

Dinner, in a bottle.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The person who genuinely prefers the app, thinks cooking is a personality flaw, and would ask if the cumin comes in a subscription. It does, technically. That is not the point.

Not everything wants unbundling.

Dinner, quietly reclassified as a logistics problem.

BARM, keeper portrait
BARM

Barm leaves the only meal nobody ordered.

Barm is a cluricaun, one of the small, roguish larder-and-cellar folk who guard the dark shelves and only come out after dark. He keeps the Dark Pantry at the back of the Sanctum, the deep savoury shelf the sweet oils never visit, and he trusts cumin because it is the smell of a real dinner, cooked by someone who meant it, the warm savoury air the delivery apps quietly replaced with a bag on a doorstep.

He has watched the Surfacefolk feed the people they love, night after night, as the one act of care that can't be misheard, and then be fed themselves by strangers for money, from kitchens they'll never see. He thinks something small and important got lost in the unbundling.

So he keeps the pantry warm, and comes out after the guests have gone, for the cook, who fed everyone and was fed by an app.

Comes out after the guests leave; keeps the savoury shelf for whoever did the cooking.

Two crates, one real kitchen

Cumin keeps company. All of it savoury and warm.
