WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Gardens became an arena of virtue.

Even the garden became a stage for visible virtue. The no-mow signage announcing your restraint, the pollinator credentials, the little placards, the lawn with an entire manifesto attached, every border now expected to make a public statement about the kind of person who tends it. And somewhere under all that campaigning, the actual point of a garden, that it might simply be a composed and pleasant place to stand in of an evening, got rather lost. The rosy green does not campaign. It has no position statement. It just makes the evening composed.

Your garden doesn't need a position statement. It needs an atmosphere.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Rose Geranium Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of Pelargonium graveolens from Réunion Island, the classic Bourbon rose geranium. Sweet, rosy and green, a fresh floral with the soft warmth of rose and a bright, leafy, garden-green edge underneath, the rosier and more graceful of the geraniums. It is the smell of a garden at its ease, composed and unhurried, with nothing whatsoever to prove and no sign staked in it announcing what it stands for.

The rosier geranium. Composed, graceful, and campaigning for nothing.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, rose geranium is what Attar keeps in the Composed Garden, for the ones whose running commentary on next door's borders is really a survey of their own postponements.

  • It doesn't campaign: Kept for the intention to have a garden, or a room, that is simply composed, without a manifesto, a signboard or a position statement attached.
  • The memo, in flower form: For every verdict you've passed on next door's garden that was really a memo to yourself. The rosy green knows. It offers you the composed evening anyway.
  • Rosy green air: Sweet, rosy, green floral air that gives a room or a garden a fresh, composed, unforced balance.
  • The garden-gate hour: For the garden-gate evening, the rosy green domestic balance, the composed hour after the day.

WHY YOU NEED IT

A composed evening. No manifesto required.

Kept for the garden-gate evening, the rosy green domestic balance, the composed hour after the day. A few drops when you'd like a garden or a room simply at its ease, and when you notice the running verdict you keep passing on next door's borders was, all along, a rather pointed memo to yourself.

Every verdict on next door was a memo to yourself. Here it is, in flower form.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Rose geranium contains naturally occurring geraniol and citronellol and can be a skin sensitiser in some people, so use it in moderation and in a well-ventilated space. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE GARDEN-JUDGE

Has strong, unsolicited opinions about everyone else's borders, most of which are really about their own to-do list. Give them a composed evening instead of a verdict.

To the commentator

The memo, in flower form.

GIFT · THE VIRTUE-SIGNAGE-WEARY

Is quietly tired of gardens that come with a manifesto and a placard. Give them the rosy green that just makes the evening nice.

To the un-campaigning one

No position statement.

GIFT · THE ROSY-GREEN SORT

Loves a sweet, rosy, fresh, green floral, graceful rather than heavy. This is the rosier, more composed geranium.

To the composed one

Rosy, green, at ease.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The person who would want to know its pollinator credentials and carbon position before enjoying it. It hasn't got a manifesto. It has an atmosphere. That's the whole pitch.

No manifesto attached.

Gardens became an arena of virtue.

PORTRAIT · ATTAR
IN THE COMPOSED GARDEN
ATTAR

Attar answered the garden's position with a graceful evening.

Attar is an anthousa, one of the old flower-nymphs of the garden, graceful and unhurried and entirely without a manifesto, who tend a place simply so that it is lovely to stand in. Attar keeps the Composed Garden of the Sanctum, and trusts rose geranium because it makes an evening composed without campaigning for a single thing: rosy, green, graceful, and staking no signs in the lawn.

Attar has watched the Surfacefolk turn their gardens into arenas of visible virtue, all placards and pollinator credentials and lawns with positions, and has watched, with a great deal of grace, the particular sort of person who passes constant verdict on next door's borders as a way of not looking at their own postponed ones. Attar knows exactly what that criticism is doing.

And offers the composed evening anyway. Gracious, that. The verdict on next door, Attar gently notes, was always a memo to yourself, and here it is, softened into flower form, with no sign staked in it and nothing at all to prove.

Tends the garden gracefully; campaigns for nothing; sees your projected verdicts and offers grace regardless.

Two crates, composed

Rose Geranium keeps company. None of it campaigning.

About the verdicts you keep passing:

Every verdict on next door was a memo to yourself.

That running commentary you keep up about other people's gardens, their borders, their unmown verges, their choices, if you listen closely, is very rarely about them. It's a survey of your own postponements, read out loud onto someone else's lawn: the thing you haven't done, projected next door where it's easier to judge. The garden knows exactly what the criticism is doing. It isn't offended. It's offering you the composed evening anyway.

JUDGE THE BORDERS.AUDIT NEXT DOOR.POSTPONE YOUR OWN.
You had strong opinions about someone else's choices this week that landed suspiciously close to home.

So take the memo, gently, and let the evening be composed instead of critical. Set the rosy-green rose geranium going and let the garden simply be at its ease, campaigning for nothing, judging no one, least of all you. Here's the memo, in flower form.
