English Lavender Essential Oil

They built 'Lavender Rise' where the lavender grew. The hedgerow escaped into a bottle.
They paved the market town, franchised the high street, and sold the meadow for executive new-builds named after the flowers they bulldozed. The real hedgerow didn't wait around. It retreated into ten millilitres, and here it is.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

They built 'Lavender Rise' on the meadow. Lavender not included.

There is a new estate at the edge of town. It is called Lavender Rise. Plots start at £450,000. It was built on the meadow where the lavender actually grew, which was removed to make way for the houses named after it. The high street below has the same six shops as every other high street, and the market square is a car park with heritage bollards. The village, as a thing you could belong to, has been sold and renamed and priced out of reach.

Lavender Rise. Plots from £450,000. It's here, in the bottle. It escaped.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

English Lavender Essential Oil, steam distilled from the flowering tips of Lavandula angustifolia from the UK. Fresh, sweet and softly floral with a gentle fruity edge and a rounded, balsamic calm, rounder and less sharp than the industrial lavandin sold by the bin-liner. The smell of a real hedgerow at dusk, not a fabric conditioner's idea of one.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, English lavender is what Hodge keeps at the Hedgerow End, for the ones who quietly ache at dusk for a settled village life that got paved over, and deserve the good part of it anyway.

  • The kept dusk: Kept for the intention to hold onto the good, settled, rooted part of a life, even when the whole of it got priced out.
  • Belonging, extracted: For when you want the parish-quiet feeling of somewhere to belong, without the timeline you were meant to hit by now.
  • Composed and settled: Sweet, soft, respectable floral air that gives a space the quiet order of a market-town evening.
  • The parish-notice hour: For the composed dusk hour, after the shops shut, the good part of the village evening.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Bring the good part of the village in.

Traditionally the flower of the English hedgerow and the parish garden, kept for the composed, settled end of the evening. A few drops at dusk when you want the room to hold the good part of a village evening: respectable, quiet, unhurried, the settled feeling you were promised, available without the estate agent.

The village evening without the village timeline. Have the part you wanted.

GIFT · THE PRICED-OUT DREAMER

Was going to have the settled village life by now, quietly gave up, still aches for it at dusk. Give them the good part.

To the one who wanted the village

The dusk, without the deposit.

GIFT · THE HOMESICK-FOR-NOWHERE-EXACT

Misses a rooted, belonging kind of place they're not sure they ever quite had.

To the one longing for somewhere

A parish evening in a bottle.

GIFT · THE LAVENDER TRADITIONALIST

Loves the flower proper, the hedgerow kind, not the fabric-softener version.

To the hedgerow loyalist

The real one. From an actual field.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The property developer who'd name the estate Lavender Rise, bulldoze the meadow, and then diffuse English lavender in the show home to sell the feeling back at £450,000 a plot.

Sold the meadow. Kept the name.

They built 'Lavender Rise' on the meadow. Lavender not included.

HODGE, keeper portrait
HODGE

Hodge still puts the cream out. Nothing comes.

Hodge is a lubber-fiend, one of the large, shaggy, gentle old farm-spirits who used to keep English farmhouses running in exchange for a bowl of cream and a warm hearth to sleep by. He kept the same one for four hundred years. Then, up on the surface, it was bought, cleared, and turned into a show home for an estate called Lavender Rise, and Hodge, with nowhere else to be, came down and took over the Hedgerow End.

He trusts English lavender because it is the last honest bit of the place he lost: the actual hedgerow flower, not the marketed idea of it, still smelling of the dusk he used to sit out in while the farmhouse settled behind him. It is, in a real sense, the only part of his home that made it out.

He has watched the Surfacefolk mourn the same thing without quite naming it: the settled, rooted, belonging life they were told they'd have, sold off and renamed and put out of reach. He can't give them the farmhouse back. Nobody can. But he can keep the dusk-smell of it alive, and hand a little of it up, which he does, gladly, to anyone arriving aching for a place.

Lost his farmhouse to a show home named after the flowers it replaced; kept the flower.

Two crates, one parish evening

English Lavender keeps company. All of it settled.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE HEDGEROW END
You could still chase the whole thing:

Go and view the show home.

Reserve the plot at Lavender Rise. Take on the timeline your family implied, the settled village life with the right postcode and the heritage bollards and the £450,000 of reasons it's out of reach. Chase the entire package. Most people are, or are quietly grieving that they can't. It's a respectable ache to carry.

VIEW THE SHOW HOME.RESERVE YOUR PLOT.£450,000.
You stopped chasing the village years ago, except at dusk, when it still aches a little.

But it was never the whole package you wanted. It was the parish-quiet dusk, the settled belonging feeling, the good part. And that part didn't get sold. It retreated into a hedgerow and then into a bottle, and it's yours for rather less than a deposit. Have the part you actually wanted. No mortgage attached.
