WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

High Alpine Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia grown high, where thinner air and stronger light push up the light, powdery, sweet ester the flower is loved for. Steam distilled from the flowering tips. Lighter, sweeter and airier than lowland lavender, cooler and more delicate, less the herb drawer and more the thin bright air of somewhere high and clear. The country hardly matters. Vetta is an oread, one of the mountain nymphs who keep the high, thin-aired, clear places where the light is stronger and the world falls away below. She keeps the High Ledge of the Sanctum, where the alpine lavender is, and she trusts it because it carries the height in it: light, sweet, airy, the flower grown high enough that the thin air changed its very scent.

She has watched the Surfacefolk build a whole economy on selling height back by the metre, and, sadder still, watched them fill their pockets with saved pictures of high clear places they'll visit 'when things calm down.' Vetta has kept the high places a long time. She has never once seen things calm down. That was never how it worked.

So she keeps a little of the altitude on the ledge, unbilled, for the ones who keep deferring the going. The dusk is already high and clear. It is only waiting to be let in.
