WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Turmeric Essential Oil, steam distilled from the rhizome of Curcuma longa from India, the golden root of the Indian kitchen, a warm cousin of ginger. Warm, spicy, earthy and woody, richer and rounder and more grounding than ginger, with that unmistakable golden, faintly curried depth. It is, genuinely, the colour gold rendered as a smell: warm, deep and a little defiant, and yes, like the root itself, inclined to leave a golden mark on whatever it touches.

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment; use sparingly and for short sessions. Note that turmeric oil is a deep golden colour and can stain fabrics, surfaces and porous materials, so keep it off worktops and soft furnishings. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3, and seek guidance first if you take medication for diabetes. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking other medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Ochre takes every beige wall as a personal insult.

Ochre is a gild-sprite, one of the small warm pigment-folk made of golden earth, who cannot pass through a room without leaving a faint gold on the edges of things, and would not stop if they could. Ochre keeps the Golden Root of the Sanctum, and trusts turmeric because all it ever really did was warm a room and colour whatever it touched, which, to a gild-sprite, is the highest possible praise.

Ochre has watched the Surfacefolk let the superfood machine strip-mine the root for a decade of empty promises, and, worse, watched them beige themselves gradually, by accident, the wardrobe going grey, the walls going grey, the answers at parties going grey, nobody ever quite deciding it. Ochre takes this extremely personally.

So Ochre keeps the gold, claims stripped off and colour left in, for the quietly greyed ones, and begins, gently, with the air, on the firm principle that colour is reversible and the wardrobe can jolly well watch and learn.
