Cypress Essential Oil

You do your best brooding at the window and call it thinking. Half of it is.
They paved the market town, then sold you a framed forest for the wall above the radiator. The print isn't fooling anyone. Cypress, the tree that outlives everything, stands a taller, greener witness at your window.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

They paved the tall things, then sold you a photo of them.

The city's method is consistent: pave over the tall living things, build a car park where they stood, and then, sensing something is missing, sell you a framed photograph of a forest to hang above the radiator. You now brood at a window with a view of a wall, thinking hard, with a poster of nature doing an unconvincing impression of the thing it replaced.

The print isn't fooling anyone. The tree, in oil form, might.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Cypress Essential Oil, steam distilled from the needles and twigs of Cupressus sempervirens from Spain. Fresh and green with a sweet-balsamic depth, pine-like but drier and more upright, finishing on a lingering, almost sweet resinousness. A tall smell, if a smell can be tall: clean and vertical and serious.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, cypress is what Thole keeps by the Tall Window, for the ones getting through something who deserve a taller, more enduring companion than a poster.

  • The steady witness: Traditionally the tree of endurance; kept to stand upright with you through a change or a hard passage.
  • Upright through it: For when you want to feel accompanied and steady while getting through something, rather than coping alone at a window.
  • Tall and green: Fresh, upright, resinous air that gives a space the character of standing among tall conifers.
  • The rain-window hour: For the solemn, reflective, getting-through-it hour that wants a green witness.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Set a taller, greener witness at the window.

Traditionally the tree of endurance and getting through change, planted where things end and begin, kept for the rain-window hour. A few drops when you're thinking something through or getting through something: the solemn, upright, tall-green hour that wants a steady witness rather than a distraction.

Some thinking needs company. Preferably something that has endured worse.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The relentless positivity coach who'd tell someone mid-grief to 'reframe it as growth' and would market cypress as a 'transformation accelerator'. The tree endures things. It doesn't hustle them.

It endures things. It doesn't hustle them.

They paved the tall things, then sold you a photo of them.

THOLE, keeper portrait
THOLE

Thole supervises the brooding without interrupting.

Thole is a leshy, one of the tall, still, moss-shouldered forest-guardians who stand at the edges of things and keep watch. He keeps the Tall Window, the single high shaft in the Sanctum where surface weather shows, and he has stood beside it, patient and upright, for longer than most of the caverns have had names. His name is an old word for endurance, and he lives up to it without effort.

He trusts cypress because it is the tree that does what he does: stands tall, stays put, endures the seasons, and witnesses the comings and goings without needing to comment. He and the tree are the same profession.

He has watched Surfacefolk arrive at the window in the middle of one hard passage or another, and stand there thinking. He never interrupts. He simply stands with them, tall and green and enduring, and has noticed it seems to help, being kept company by something that has plainly got through worse and is still standing.

Stands witness at the window and never once interrupts; finds this is usually the help required.

Two crates, one tall green

Cypress keeps company. All of it upright.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE TALL WINDOW
Before you go and not-get-through it alone:

You'll be back at that window.

Some grey afternoon, mid-change, mid-decision, mid-getting-through-something, you'll end up at the window again, thinking hard, doing the slow work of a transition nobody else can do for you. The poster of the forest will be behind you, as unconvincing as ever, contributing nothing.

JUST COPE.STARE AT THE WALL.HANG ANOTHER PRINT.
You've done your hardest thinking at that window and it's never once stood with you.

You weren't being morbid there. You were getting through something, which is quiet, upright, unglamorous work. Set the tall green cypress going and let the room stand witness with you, the way a conifer that has endured a few centuries might. Stand upright a while longer. Thole has seen worse get through, and stay standing.
