Cornmint Essential Oil

Work went abstract, all dashboards and metrics. Nothing smells of effort anymore.
Work went abstract upstairs: dashboards about meetings about metrics, and nothing you do smells of anything anymore. Cornmint is what effort smelled like back when effort made something you could drop on your foot. No deliverables. Just delivery, the old kind.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

A full day's work, and nothing you could hold.

Somewhere upstairs, work got abstract. It became dashboards about meetings about metrics, decks about strategies about alignments, a great deal of important activity that produces nothing you could ever hold, drop, or point at. You put in a full, honest day and end it unable to say what you actually made. Effort used to smell of something. Now it smells of a lukewarm meeting room and a notification.

No deliverables. Just delivery. The old kind. With mint on it.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Cornmint Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Mentha arvensis from China. Strong, fresh and sharply minty, high in menthol, brisker and more workmanlike than the fancier peppermint, of which it is the honest, hard-grafting, unglamorous cousin. It smells like a cold-green morning with real work in it, the kind that leaves something behind.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, cornmint is what Delve keeps by the Tool Wall, for the ones whose work went abstract and who count their own graft only when management can see it.

  • Real effort: Kept for the intention to feel your work is real and made something, not just another dashboard about a meeting about a metric.
  • All hours count: For when you want the graft nobody witnessed to count as much as the graft that was seen.
  • A working room: Strong, fresh, minty air that gives a space the brisk, honest character of a place where real work gets done.
  • The graft hour: For the roll-up-sleeves hour, the practical morning, the work you can point at afterwards.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Put the effort back into the air.

Kept for the roll-up-sleeves hour, the brisk practical morning, the work you'll be able to point at afterwards. A few drops when you want the room to feel like a place where real, honest, made-something graft is going on, rather than another abstract Tuesday of metrics about metrics.

The unwitnessed work still happened. The mint was there. It'll vouch.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Cornmint is high in menthol; use sparingly and avoid around infants and young children. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE ONE WHOSE WORK WENT ABSTRACT

Puts in a full day and can't say what they made. Give them the smell of effort that leaves something behind.

To the dashboard-weary one

Work you could drop on your foot.

GIFT · THE UNWITNESSED GRAFTER

Does the real work nobody sees, counts it only when management does. Their graft counts. Tell them.

To the quiet worker

All hours, including the unseen ones.

GIFT · THE PRACTICAL SORT

Likes a brisk, sharp, no-nonsense mint and a room that means business.

To the roll-up-sleeves one

Brisk, honest, and gets on with it.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The person who has 'circled back' more times than they've made anything, and would put cornmint on a slide about a synergy. It made something once. That's more than the slide will.

Delivery, not deliverables.

A full day's work, and nothing you could hold.

DELVE, keeper portrait
DELVE

Delve’s real tally is longer than management’s.

Delve is a fenodyree, one of the great shaggy hard-working folk who do prodigious honest labour by night and expect no thanks for it, only that the work gets done. He keeps the Tool Wall, where the working oils hang, and he trusts cornmint above the showier mints because it is the one that grafts: strong, sharp, unglamorous, cheaper because it works for a living rather than posing for one.

He has watched the Surfacefolk go abstract upstairs, making dashboards about meetings about metrics, ending honest days unable to name a single thing they built, and he finds it disorienting, this work that makes nothing you could drop on your foot.

Mostly, though, he keeps a tally the management never sees: of the real graft, the unwitnessed effort, the hours nobody clocked. Those hours happened. Delve wrote them down. If anyone ever asks, the mint will vouch, and so will he.

Does the work of ten, keeps a tally of every unwitnessed hour, and vouches for yours.

Two crates, honest graft

Cornmint keeps company. All of it hard-working.

Not a scolding. A witness statement:

The unwitnessed work still happened.

You put in real graft this week that no dashboard captured, no manager saw, no metric counted, and because the modern workplace only believes in effort it can measure, you've half-started to doubt it was work at all. It was. It just didn't leave a chart behind, the way real effort rarely does.

MAKE A DECK ABOUT IT.MEASURE THE METRIC.CIRCLE BACK.
You worked yourself flat this week and couldn't point to one thing on the dashboard to prove it.

Set the sharp working mint going and let the room smell of honest, made-something effort again, the kind that leaves something behind. The unwitnessed work still happened. The mint was there. It'll vouch. So will Delve.
