There is a new estate at the edge of town. It is called Lavender Rise. Plots start at £450,000. It was built on the meadow where the lavender actually grew, which was removed to make way for the houses named after it. The high street below has the same six shops as every other high street, and the market square is a car park with heritage bollards. The village, as a thing you could belong to, has been sold and renamed and priced out of reach.

English Lavender Essential Oil, steam distilled from the flowering tips of Lavandula angustifolia from the UK. Hodge still puts the cream out. Nothing comes.

Hodge is a lubber-fiend, one of the large, shaggy, gentle old farm-spirits who used to keep English farmhouses running in exchange for a bowl of cream and a warm hearth to sleep by. He kept the same one for four hundred years. Then, up on the surface, it was bought, cleared, and turned into a show home for an estate called Lavender Rise, and Hodge, with nowhere else to be, came down and took over the Hedgerow End.

He trusts English lavender because it is the last honest bit of the place he lost: the actual hedgerow flower, not the marketed idea of it, still smelling of the dusk he used to sit out in while the farmhouse settled behind him. It is, in a real sense, the only part of his home that made it out.

He has watched the Surfacefolk mourn the same thing without quite naming it: the settled, rooted, belonging life they were told they'd have, sold off and renamed and put out of reach. He can't give them the farmhouse back. Nobody can. But he can keep the dusk-smell of it alive, and hand a little of it up, which he does, gladly, to anyone arriving aching for a place.
