WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SOLD

Sugar-coating became infrastructure.

Everything upstairs in the Ovurwurld is sweetened first, as standard. The bad news arrives wrapped in three compliments. The brutal contract opens with 'we're so excited'. The breakup comes by text, softened to the point of dishonesty. Sugar-coating stopped being a courtesy and became infrastructure: a sweet layer applied to everything, in the wrong order, hiding the frost underneath until it's too late to prepare for it. Wintergreen, by contrast, does both, sweetness and frost, but in the correct order, and clearly labelled. Disclosure, as it should be.

Sweet first, icy after, clearly labelled. Take notes, everyone upstairs.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Wintergreen Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria procumbens from China. Unmistakable: a bright, sweet, almost sugary opening, that old teaberry-and-root-beer note, followed instantly by a sharp, cold, minty snap that snaps the whole thing clean. Sweet, then icy, in exactly that order. One of the most distinctive and most potent aromas on the shelf, and, for reasons the safety note will make very clear, one to keep a careful, respectful distance from.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, wintergreen is what Rime keeps in the Cold Sweet Room, for the ones who long ago perfected the warm hello and the cool distance, and kept everyone at arm's length, including the ones they wanted closer.

  • Sweet, then honest frost: Kept for the intention to have one thing that gives you the sweetness and the chill in the correct order, and labels both.
  • Recognise the technique?: For the warm-hello-cool-distance pattern you know from the inside. The oil wears it honestly. You could try something warmer.
  • A cold sweet snap: Sweet, icy, minty-sharp air that gives a room a bracing, clearly-labelled snap.
  • The bracing hour: For the cold sweet-rule room, the brisk snap, the moment that wants an honest chill.

WHY YOU NEED IT

The room can wear the technique tonight.

Kept for the cold sweet-rule room, the bracing mint-sweet snap, the brisk winter-committee atmosphere. A drop or two, no more, when you want a room with a sweet opening and an honest cold finish, the pattern worn openly for once, so you don't have to be the one wearing it.

Recognise the technique? Let the room wear it. You try something warmer.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment, sparingly and in a well-ventilated space; a drop or two is plenty. IMPORTANT: this oil is almost entirely methyl salicylate, closely related to aspirin, and is genuinely toxic if swallowed, even in small amounts, which can be extremely dangerous or fatal, especially to children and pets. Keep it tightly closed, well out of reach of children and animals, and stored safely. Never ingest it; never add it to food or drink; never use it in baths; and never apply it to skin, even diluted or on broken skin, or use it for massage or personal care. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, around children, or if you take blood-thinning medication or have an aspirin or salicylate allergy, asthma or a bleeding disorder. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames, and never leave heated equipment unattended. If any is swallowed, seek emergency medical help immediately. Seek professional guidance if in any doubt, and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE WARM-HELLO-COOL-DISTANCE ONE

Perfected pleasant-with-a-chill years ago. It kept them safe and kept everyone at arm's length. Give them the pattern, worn honestly, and maybe a nudge toward warmer.

To the bracing one

Meet your match.

GIFT · THE HONESTY-LOVER

Would rather have the sweet and the frost clearly labelled than a nasty thing hidden under sugar. This oil is disclosure, bottled.

To the plain-dealer

Both, correctly ordered.

GIFT · THE COOL-SWEET SORT

Loves that unmistakable sweet-then-icy snap: teaberry, root beer, cold mint. This is the loudest version of it.

To the sweet-cold one

Sweet, then snap.

DO NOT GIVE TO

Small children, expectant parents, or anyone on blood-thinners: this one is genuinely potent and needs a careful home. When in doubt, keep it well out of reach and read the safety note.

Handle with real care.

Sugar-coating became infrastructure.

PORTRAIT · RIME
IN THE COLD SWEET ROOM
RIME

Rime says the sweetness must admit the frost.

Rime is a snow-maiden, one of the sweet-faced, frost-hearted folk who can offer the warmest welcome in the world and must, by their very nature, keep a certain distance, because to be held too close, too warm, would be the end of them. She keeps the Cold Sweet Room of the Sanctum, and she trusts wintergreen because it wears her exact pattern honestly: sweet first, then frost, in the correct order, hiding nothing.

She has watched the Surfacefolk perfect the same technique, the warm hello and the cool distance, and use it, as she does, to stay safe, and she knows precisely what it costs, because she has kept everyone she ever wanted closer at exactly arm's length, and cannot, herself, do otherwise.

So she keeps the sweet-cold snap for the ones who recognise the pattern from the inside, and lets the room wear it for an evening, so that they, unlike her, are free to go and try something warmer.

Warm to greet, cool to hold; knows the arm's-length pattern from the inside; hopes you needn't keep it.

Two crates, cold and sweet

Wintergreen keeps company. All of it bracing.

About the pattern you perfected:

Warm hello. Cool distance. Familiar?

You learned it early and you got very good at it: the warm, generous, disarming hello, followed by the cool, careful distance that never quite lets anyone all the way in. It kept you safe. It also kept everyone at arm's length, the ones you were guarding against and the ones you actually wanted closer, without much distinction. The technique doesn't sort them for you. That's the trouble with it.

WARM HELLO.COOL DISTANCE.EVERYONE AT ARM'S LENGTH.
You held someone at exactly arm's length this year that you'd have liked much nearer.

Let the room wear the pattern tonight, sweet then frost, honestly labelled, so you don't have to. And then, maybe, with the technique hung up on the wall for an evening, try something a degree or two warmer. The room can wear it. You can try something warmer.
